What is a Postpartum Doula?

A postpartum doula assists with the mother’s recovery after childbirth and supports the new parents in the first three months of the newborn's life.  This support includes a special attention to the mother’s physical and emotional needs, which is truly the first line of defense against postpartum depression.  The doula also assists with the family’s transition to life with a newborn – caring for the baby while mom rests, helping to establish proper feeding methods and routines, and offering help wherever needed with the goal of bringing the family to a state of comfortable independence.

How can I become a Postpartum Doula?

Certification is an important step in becoming a postpartum doula.  There are quite a few organizations that train for this role and it is important to choose one that best suits your goals.  DONA is the most well-known and well-regarded certifying organization, and the one that many insurance companies accept for reimbursement purposes.  The first step toward DONA International certification is to attend a training workshop.  This in-person training will teach you how to support, nurture, and educate families who are in the postpartum period.  You will also receive a postpartum doula manual, business forms, and additional handouts and resources that will prepare you for success in this profession.

Get Started!
