Breastfeeding Basics

Planning to breastfeed your baby?  Join us to learn the basics and to find out how you can get your breastfeeding relationship off to the best start possible.  Whether this will be your first time breastfeeding or you are looking for a refresher course, you will find the information you need in this 90 minute class.

You will learn about:

  • The short-term and long-term health benefits breastfeeding has for both mom and baby.

  • The important differences between breastmilk and formula.

  • What you can do to increase the hormones that regulate your breastmilk.

  • How breastmilk changes within a feed, within a day, and throughout the course of lactation.

  • How you can establish and maintain your supply.

  • The role that skin-to-skin contact plays in your breastfeeding relationship.

  • Positions for breastfeeding – for comfort, for ease, and for special issues.

  • How to achieve a proper latch, what is normal and what is not.

  • Issues that could pose a problem and how to avoid or resolve them.

  • How you can be sure your baby is getting enough milk.

  • Your baby’s hunger cues and how to anticipate them.

  • What you can expect in the immediate postpartum period as you begin your breastfeeding journey.

This interactive class utilizes live instruction and demonstrations as well as video clips to thoroughly teach the mechanics of the correct latch.  Ample time is set aside for discussion to cover concerns and to share resources.

All expectant mothers are encouraged to attend this class, even if they have breastfed before.  This class is for women only, but we encourage attendees to share the handouts with their partners - their support is an important part of the breastfeeding journey!  We also ask that childcare is arranged for all children (unless they are a breastfeeding infant) so that we can ensure a distraction free learning environment.   The cost for the class is $20 per person and prepayment is required to reserve your seat and materials.  An invoice will be sent to you within a week of our receipt of your online registration.  Clients of Celebrate Birth are required to attend this class and the fee is included in the cost of care.
