The Nest Lakeland - lactation consultations, breastfeeding support

Lactation Support

Classes and consultations, group and private support available.  Our staff includes Certified Breastfeeding Specialists and an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).  We strive to be a source of education, encouragement, and support for mothers who have chosen to provide this naturally healthy start for their children.

Breastfeeding is natural, normal, and incredibly beneficial for both mom and baby.  It is how a woman's body was designed to feed its offspring, and it is how babies are meant to be nourished.  Still, we recognize that the decision to breastfeed is a personal one and we understand that the journey can sometimes bring unique challenges.  We offer a variety of options and packages to meet the needs of our community's breastfeeding moms, all catered to their individual circumstances.  Are you looking for assistance with a specific issue not covered below?  Give us a call or send us a message to let us know how we can best serve you!

Sliding scale fees and an application for scholarships are available upon request.

Get Pumped! class   $50

Every lactation journey is different and not every nursing mother will need to use a breastpump on a regular basis, but for those who do it can feel like a daunting task to master.  This class will provide all of the information you  need to get started, plus some valuable hacks that may help along the way to boost not only your supply but your confidence and expertise, too!  (Attendance at a breastfeeding class or prior breastfeeding experience is recommended before attending this class.)  For more details and to register, CLICK HERE.

prenatal assessment package   $100

Pregnant or adopting and planning to breastfeed?  This package includes registration to our Breastfeeding Basics class (a $40 value) and a private in-office 1-hour consultation to discuss your breastfeeding goals, address potential problems, and to help you plan for a successful start to your breastfeeding journey.   We will review your health history and discuss risk factors that may affect your lactation, and the consultation will be personalized to your specific needs.  Whatever your goals are, our lactation professional will create a plan to help you reach them.  (Attendance at a breastfeeding class is required prior to the consultation.)

initial lactation visit - birth to 3 months   $80 ($100 for twins)

This private consultation includes a breast assessment, newborn exam, and latch evaluation.  You will have an opportunity to share about your baby's birth and understand how it relates to your breastfeeding experience.  The lactation counselor will review your nutritional health and any medicines you may be taking as they relate to lactation, she will address potential problems and offer solutions to resolve them, and together you will discuss your goals and create a plan for your breastfeeding journey.  Follow-up visits will be scheduled if needed.  (60-90 minutes)

initial lactation visit - 3 months and beyond   $80 ($100 for twins)

This private consultation will focus on any concerns or challenges that might arise as your baby grows beyond the newborn stage.  Topics covered during this visit may include (but are not limited to) supply regulation, nursing strikes, changes in the breastfeeding relationship, going back to work, pumping, bottle feeding, and introducing solids.  Your nutritional health will be discussed as well as any other factors that may have an impact on your goals.  Follow-up visits will be scheduled if needed. (60-90 minutes)

follow-up visits   $50 ($65 for twins)

Established clients who have completed an Initial Lactation Visit can schedule a Follow-Up Visit with us to review their progress from the prior visit and address any new concerns that may have developed.  (30-60 minutes)

flange fitting   $40

Breast pump flanges come in a variety of sizes.  Using the wrong flange can cause pain and reduce the effectiveness of your pump.  If your pumping sessions are painful or if you feel like your pump isn't  emptying your breast as well as it should, it might be due to the size of your flange.  In a flange fitting consultation, the lactation counselor will properly measure your nipple to determine what size is best for you, assess the comfort and function of your current flanges, help you try other sizes if necessary, and provide general tips about your pump.  (15-30 minutes)

comprehensive package    $200 ($250 for twins)

This package includes registration in our Breastfeeding Basics class, a 1-hour prenatal assessment consultation to discuss your breastfeeding goals, address potential problems, and to help you plan for the postpartum period, an Initial Lactation Visit following the birth, and 2 follow up visits within the first 6 weeks postpartum.

Weigh-In Clinic   Thursdays, 10-11:30am

This free drop-in clinic offers an opportunity for mothers to connect with other breastfeeding moms while weighing their babies before and after a feeding.  A lactation counselor will be on hand to answer general questions in this relaxed environment.  All children are welcome and light refreshments will be provided.
